The Achievers are a UK band specialising in vintage dance music. They light-up events with a setlist packed full of rhythm & blues, jump-blues, boogie-woogie, gospel and a hint of southern soul – music that inspires even the most casual of dancers. Armed with original songs and a wealth of reworked R&B barnstormers – cherry-picked from the 40s, 50s and 60s – they are just starting to establish a name for themselves on the UK and European blues scene.
Their influences include Little Willie John, Wynonie Harris, the Blind Boys of Alabama, James Carr, Magic Sam and the output of long defunct labels such as Goldwax and Hi! Records. And after 100s of live performances they are proving their ability to bring energy, musicianship and camaraderie to every gig to create truly memorable shows.
They formed in 2014, after band leader/vocalist Steve Ferbrache moved to Gloucestershire in search of a new way to collaborate. And after numerous chance encounters and stage-invasions by local musicians, he’d performed over 200 gigs in the first 12 months – many with what became the core of the band. Using their dedication to playing live, the band quickly became a tight, hard-working, hard-playing unit that preferred to play gigs rather than rehearse – learning much of their repertoire on stage.
Prior to his arrival in Gloucestershire, Steve had travelled and performed across the UK and US throughout the mid-00s, before becoming a regular on the London blues and roots scene. There he opened shows for the emerging James Hunter, and Seasick Steve – who said he had “one hell of a voice”. He also opened for British acoustic blues pioneers Wizz Jones and Davy Graham.
Joining Steve is a tight-knit group of virtuoso musicians:
Aron Attwood (drums) – a genuine musical polymath with a percussive style like no other. An enviable ear for harmony means his backing vocals add even more texture to the already rich Achievers sound.
Rufus Fry (harmonica) – one of, if not the most in-demand harmonica specialists in the South West. His playing is influenced by heroes Little Walter and Jason Ricci.
Taylor Wheeler (bass) – a graduate of BIMM Bristol and an in-demand pro session musician in his own right.
